I want to be careful about framing this as a lessons post, because most of what I know comes from making mistakes myself or watching people I know make them, not from a vantage point of having done everything correctly.

With that said: there are patterns I’ve seen often enough in early-stage brand building — including in Vedikaura’s early months — that feel worth naming.

Advertising before the foundation is ready. I mentioned this in a previous post, but it’s worth repeating because it’s the most common expensive mistake. Paid traffic to a product page that doesn’t convert is money spent learning that the page doesn’t work, which is a more expensive lesson than just fixing the page first.

Trying to be everywhere before being good anywhere. Instagram, Facebook, Amazon, Shopify, LinkedIn, YouTube — the number of channels available is large and the temptation to be on all of them is real. Being present on five channels with mediocre content is worse than being strong on two. Attention is limited and distributing it across too many surfaces dilutes everything.

Describing the product instead of describing the experience of having it. Product descriptions that read like specifications miss the actual job of product description, which is to help the customer imagine themselves with the product in their life. What does this object make possible? What problem does it solve in a way the customer will actually feel?

Ignoring the review management process. Reviews are the most effective marketing tool available to a new brand in most categories. Getting the first genuine positive reviews, thanking customers, responding to neutral ones — this work is often deprioritised. It shouldn’t be.

Optimising for vanity metrics. Follower counts, likes, impressions — these are visible and feel like evidence of progress. They are not the same as revenue or customer relationships. Optimising for them at the expense of the metrics that actually predict business health is a distraction that feels productive.

What mistake has been your most expensive teacher?
